How to Prepare for an ISO 9001 Internal Audit
How to Prepare for an ISO 9001 Internal Audit
Internal audits are the backbone of ISO 9001 clause 9.2 — and the most common place manufacturers get caught unprepared.
What auditors are actually looking for
An ISO 9001 internal audit is not just a document check. Auditors want to see evidence that your quality management system is operating as documented, not just written down somewhere.
That means approved, current procedures accessible to the people doing the work, records showing processes were followed, corrective actions closed with verified effectiveness, and management review records that show leadership engagement.
Where manufacturers fall short
1. Documents that exist but aren’t controlled. Procedures live in shared drives with no version governance. Employees are working from outdated versions without knowing it.
2. No evidence trail. Inspections happened, approvals were given — but no timestamped record exists. When an auditor asks “show me,” you can’t.
3. Open corrective actions. CAPAs were opened after the last audit and never closed. This is a repeat finding waiting to happen.
A practical pre-audit checklist
- Review all controlled documents — are effective dates current? Are superseded versions archived?
- Pull your CAPA log — any open items older than 90 days?
- Confirm inspection records for the audit period are complete with evidence
- Verify your internal audit schedule was followed
- Prepare your management review record
